For some reason when God would strike someone down for whatever reason it seems ok. I mean he knows whats up. An interesting factor however that perturbs me about God and War/Genocide is that it involves his people.
Him taking out Sodom seems less controversial than using Israel to wipe out the Canaanites (which they didnt follow through on). But doesnt that have to effect people in weird ways.
Another opinion. I don't feel like (feel like a bad way to start an opinion I know but I dont care) any war started by man cannot be just because it requires judgement and who is one human to judge another and condemn another to die?
However, if God grants us the authority and/or commands us to, that seems more legit.
History gets sticky of rulers claiming God called them, but I obviously cant judge the heart and say he didnt but I can know the man by his fruit.
I was really scared of God today, and his wrath because it is coming. Wow, so scary!

So, you can know a man by his fruit, eh? Sounds like you're willing to pass judgement on some things (wow, that sounded really rude as I read back over what I just typed, I assure you it was not intended that way). Just something to consider... Okay so maybe that's a weak point to make...
But what about this: You don't mind being a tool for God when it comes to His ministry of reconciliation, do you? Of course not. So, why wouldn't you be willing (i.e. Samson) to be a tool for God's punishment of the fruitless? Do we get to choose what kind of tool we'll be? Or how we'll be used? Some clay he forms for noble purposes, and some he makes for common use. Does Romans 9:20-22 have anything to add to this discussion? Do we really get to choose? Alright, maybe that's a misguided argument too...
Just playing the part of devils advocate and all... At the least, I'm hoping that this can be a catalyst for better comments by others...
Happy elevens day :)
Jason I liked the first paragraph, smile, i thought i was quoting Jesus but who knows.
I am however, saying that if God commands it to absolutely do it, just like ministry. I don't necessarily think I was called to ministry though, but just to make disciples, love others and love God.
If I was given an order to a just war from God, I would have to follow it, but I suppose I was leaning to the fact that the call from God has not come during my lifetime. I dont know if I even made sense right there, but yes I would go if God told me too, but men waging war against each other seems like it should never be right in any case, can you think of one?
Heath, I don't know bro? I'm stuggling too. Here's what I'm thinking:
Clearly I wasn't there, and my education of WW2 was likely one sided. That being said, I don't think it would have been right to stand by while Hitler murdered thousands upon thousands of children, women, and men. At that point I believe people who valued life, had to take lives in order to restore peace. Were there mistakes? Absolutely. Was the post war effort handled poorly? I say yes. But, If you are asking if war is necessary I would say yes. On the other hand, if you are asking if what leads to war is necessary I say no! It is most certainly a result of sin.
Much as I would like to have it be the case, we are no longer in the garden. As a result, there is a time for war and a time for peace.
If someone comes in and physically threatens my family, I can tell you that given the opportunity, I will (without hesitation) defend them. Just as God is a shield about me, I would seek to defend my own. This for me, is peace.
Now if someone came to threaten me and my family was safe, I would pray for God's protection and also for strength so that I would turn the other cheek.
I have a lot of stuff swirling in my head, but it's late and I can't seem to type it out effectively.
So for now, good night :)
Love and miss ya bro!

Two books I recommend (though as a student you probably dont have much time):
God Politics - Jim Wallis
